U.S. And International: A Comparison Between Time Magazine Covers

Although the U.S. is globally engaged, a great number of Americans have little or no understanding of what goes on in the rest of the world. Among average Americans, knowledge of world history and geography is generally rather poor, while other issues seem far more interesting.

This can be seen reflected in the mass media, where lifestyle and celebrity topics clearly win out in popularity at the newsstand. Below are covers of the U.S. edition of Time magazine, next to covers of the international editions from the same week.

Mysterous Find In Namibia

This mysterous metal object reportedly fell out the sky in Namibia in mid-November. It was found by farmers and police officers in the remote Omusati region, about 750 km north of Windhoek. The object is described as hollow, with a diameter of about 35 cm. The weight is 6 kg. The object was found in a crater about 33 cm deep and 4 meters wide. Area residents also reported the sound of several explosions at a distance of about 3 km from where the object was found, but no other traces or objects were located.

What could this be? Maybe a tank from a crashing satellite or an upper rocket stage? Then again, the welding marks seem rather crude for a piece of space hardware.
